Sentinel Range Service brings local pd to the computer age

The local police department in southern Utah asked if we could convert a thumb switch operated target system to a computer controlled system. They wanted the computer system to be installed inside a concrete bunker on the range and have the ability to communicate with the computer remotely so that they didn't actually have to be present at the computer to make it work. We said "no problem"!

The first item on the list was to decide where in the bunker would be both viable for the customer and for the ease of installation since all the walls were at least 8" thick concrete. We decided on a location and had to pull wire through conduit from the target line into the bunker.

Once all the wire was pulled and secured, we were able to start designating the final location for the computer, the remote and the interface for the remote. Then we installed software and wrote scenarios. The next thing to do was test all the targets. All the communication was solid but there were a few mechanical issues on the line that needed to be addressed.

We found a few targets that needed some components replaced to make them work, which we did. There was also a target that had a broken piece of hardware that was jammed into its own mechanism so hard that it could not be removed conventionally. We had to get creative.

Fortunately, our creativity worked out and we were able to remove the broken piece without damaging the target itself. Once that was done, we replaced all the covers, hardware and components and ran a bunch of tests. Next, we wrote some scenarios for the customer's qualifications and showed them how to do their own in the future.

A job very well done! "Range Mastery, Mission Assurance"
